Zushi x University of Tokyo Beach Clean Idea Workshop
-Think of an idea that makes you want to pick up trash on the Zushi coast-
October 22, 2022, as the second series of the Future Beach Clean Lab, which is being worked on by Zushi City and the University of Tokyo, a citizen-participation workshop with the theme of "Thinking about ideas that make you want to pick up garbage on the Zushi coast." was carried out.
In the first half of this workshop, which is the second of the Mirai Beach Clean Lab, the kick-off WS that has been implemented so far and the four marine litter reductions on the Zushi coast that can be seen from the output of the first WS We were divided into groups and discussed about the cut of .
In the second half, by integrating the discussion contents of each group as a whole, we organized the priorities of what to do in Zushi City's beach cleanup among various approaches.
At the beginning, I will tell you about the contents and results of the WS so far, and the output so far will be laid out in the venue in an exhibition format, and the participants will appreciate it carefully. While watching, we decided on ideas and perspectives that we wanted to deepen and formed groups.

After being divided into each group, we discussed how to reduce marine litter for each aspect while discussing in a world café format.
The World Café is one of the methods of discussing and interacting with a theme divided into multiple rounds. As a characteristic way of proceeding, there is a thing that replaces the members of the group every round.
One round lasts about 20 minutes, and by changing the group members for each round and having discussions, you can use the content of discussions in other groups as inspiration, and you can go back and forth as a whole even though you are divided into groups, so the overall The advantage is that the output is likely to be generated in context.
After finishing the discussion through the World Café, each group gathered in one place and made a presentation.
We posted the content of the presentation on a large map of the city and held an overall dialogue while integrating the four perspectives on how to connect them throughout the region.
Through the dialogue, I was able to understand what kind of problems the participants with what kind of backgrounds (local governments, coastal management organizations, local residents, university officials, etc.) have, and where to approach them. I think the direction of the efforts to go up has been more organized.
Mainly, (1) the confusion caused by the different rules for sorting and handling garbage between the coast and the city (and the time and effort required for garbage disposal companies to transport and dispose of garbage), and (2) the city and coast from the perspective of each stakeholder. Discussions were held on the following themes: the propriety of setting up trash cans at the beach, (3) publicizing how to participate in beach cleaning and the rules, and (4) ingenuity in improving the efficiency of picking up litter. (Of course, we also had discussions and dialogues on several other topics.)
It is not enough to focus only on the sea in reducing marine litter. The workshop was a place where participants with diverse backgrounds could make realizations.

I think it is important to continue picking up litter naturally over a long period of time, rather than picking up litter just for that day. Education that makes it natural to pick up litter from childhood, and creating a community where people can enjoy picking up litter.
I felt that the garbage in the sea was connected to the river and the city. To be honest, if garbage spreads out into the ocean, it would be difficult for local residents and visitors to get involved in picking up garbage. That's why I think it's important to reduce garbage in towns and rivers to prevent this from happening. Among them, the creation of an environment that is easy to throw away was very impressive!
However, I think that there are many people who are reluctant to pick up other people's garbage as the awareness of infectious diseases is increasing. I have to think about how to approach it.
There was a case that could be a reference for overseas efforts.
Litter on the sea limits the number of people who can participate in the collection.
Regarding the disposal of collected garbage, it is difficult to take unified action due to differences in administration and contractors (it may change each time).
There are many people who work individually or in small groups, but they are not efficient because they do not share information with each other.
Many people wanted to pick up garbage when they saw it. It would be nice if there was a destination for the garbage that was picked up.
Even though the themes are different, the destinations are similar.
People near the coast were very interested in marine litter, and many had the idea of picking up litter.
I felt that reducing garbage in towns and rivers would help keep the seaside clean.
I just noticed there are no separation rules at Beach Clean. It would be better to have something similar to the sorting rules in town.
In Zushi City, everyone is interested in beach cleaning.
The problems and dilemmas are being studied.
There are people who quit without continuing beach cleaning, and I felt that it was important to work on how to continue. In addition, there was a difference in the awareness of sorting between people who participated in beach cleaning many times, and I felt that there was a problem with the method of disseminating information.
There is a deep connection between local communities and beach cleaning on the coast.
PET bottles are garbage that burns. Vending machine trash cans may be removed by the city.
You can pick up any litter that comes with the wood or seaweed on the beach clean. It is good if the city participates. (to this workshop)
